In the Jewish world today, history is repeating itself – with a twist.

Many of us come from families that immigrated to America from Eastern Europe two or three generations ago, grappling with the difficulties of a new country, a strange language and a foreign culture.  Our grandparents have told us of the hard work needed to build their families and create new Jewish communities from the ground up.  Today we look around and see solid, flourishing Jewish communities in all parts of the United States – communities that were cultivated by a generation of builders.

The cycle is starting again.  A new generation of builders is looking to fashion a Jewish community for tomorrow.  The twist is that this time we are not immigrating.  We are returning – to our old home, to our roots, to the Land of Israel.

In the fall of 1999, the seeds of a new, unique Jewish community were planted when a small group of English-speaking immigrants created Congregation Kehillas HaGra of Ramat Beit Shemesh (Ramat Beit Shemesh is a small city about ˝ hour west of Jerusalem).  Kehillas HaGra’s mission statement is to create a vibrant and supportive Jewish communal environment for English speakers in Israel.

The response to these efforts has been overwhelming.  In three years, Kehillas HaGra has grown to become a warm home for English speaking olim from ten different countries.  Over 150 families now take part in our Kehilla programs, and benefit from the community services we provide.  Kehillas HaGra provides the social support network so critical for people who have left their families and countries of origin.  In addition to a warm welcome and guidance for new families, the community provides a positive framework for communal bonding, constructive social activities and outings for the youth of the community, financial assistance to families struggling through the difficult economic situation in Israel and emotional support and counseling for families in crisis.

What makes Kehillas HaGra unique is the synthesis of social and spiritual activities.  Our structured program of Torah study classes allows people at all skill levels to deepen their understanding and appreciation of our Jewish Heritage.  The synagogue is filled to capacity with people who enjoy the singing and warmth of our prayer services.  And our Rabbi, Rabbi Elimelech Kornfeld, provides the spiritual guidance and leadership that hold the community together.

Our task now is to continue to build.  Unfortunately, due to the harsh downturn in the Israeli economy, we are no longer able to sustain ourselves on membership dues and local contributions.   We are turning to you to ask for your partnership in this important venture.  Our services are vital and central to the lives of many people.  Your sponsorship insures that they will continue.

For $180, you can sponsor an entire day of our programs and activities at Kehillas HaGra.  This dedication can be made in honor of a special occasion.  Or, you can sponsor a day on the Yahrzeit of a loved one, dedicating all the Torah study, prayers and charity activities in their memory.  Please take a moment to fill out the enclosed form to help Kehillas HaGra’s dream become a reality.  Thank you.
